Dr Emerson was appointed as the Minister for Small Business, Independent Contractors and the Service Economy and Minister Assisting the Finance Minister on Deregulation in December 2007. To add to his responsibilities, he was also sworn in as Minister for Competition and Consumer Affairs in June 2009.
As Minister for Small Business, Independent Contractors and the Service Economy, Dr Emerson’s focus is on strengthening the performance and competitive advantage of those sectors of the Australian economy. 
As Minister Assisting the Finance Minister on Deregulation, he works closely with the Hon Lindsay Tanner MP to pursue a range of improvements in regulatory reform – including by reducing the costs of business compliance, boosting productivity and simplifying and streamlining regulatory requirements.
As Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs, Dr Emerson is responsible for formulating, implementing and administering competition and consumer policy.
