Indigenous Staff Scholarships now open

24 Jun 2013

Indigenous university staff can now apply for scholarships that will help them take a year off work to study fulltime.

The Indigenous Staff Scholarships are for outstanding staff who have actively encouraged Indigenous students to take part in and succeed at university.

Minister for Higher Education and Skills Sharon Bird said the scholarships were part of the Gillard Labor Government's plan to close the gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in higher education.

"Without the inspiration and encouragement of Indigenous university staff, many Indigenous students may never have entered the gates of a university," Minister Bird said.

"These scholarships help these dedicated staff to take one year of leave to focus on fulltime study for their own development. The scholarships will help recipients build their career, and become role models for even more students."

Five Indigenous Staff Scholarships will be awarded each year to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.

Each scholarship involves a stipend of $27,311 plus up to $13,542 to cover tuition fees or student contributions.

Applications for 2014 Indigenous Staff Scholarships open on 24 June 2013 and close on 27 September 2013.
