About us

Innovation and Science Australia is an independent statutory board that provides strategic whole-of-government advice on all innovation, science and research matters. It provides advice to the Australian Government, through the Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, to the Investment, Infrastructure and Innovation Committee of Cabinet.

The Board is also responsible for monitoring and overseeing a number of innovation programs through several subordinate committees. In doing so, the Board helps to coordinate the government's investment in innovation, science and research. It also has a strong role in stimulating public discussion and debate about innovation and science.

The Board is made up of 12 members, and a Special Advisor, and includes high-profile entrepreneurs, investors, researchers and educators, all with extensive local and global experience. It is chaired by Mr Bill Ferris AC, with Australia’s Chief Scientist serving as Deputy Chair. Meet our Board members.

The Board’s three strategic objectives for 2017/18 include:

  • informing Australian Government policy on Australian innovation, science and research
  • overseeing innovation programs to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of delivery
  • advocating and championing for Australia’s innovation, science and research system.

These objectives are consistent with the Statement of Expectations issued by the Australian Government, which outlines the  expectations for Innovation Science Australia. The Board’s response is detailed in its Statement of Intent.

Innovation and Science Australia publishes its research and advice to promote public discussion, and publicly advocates for reforms on key innovation, science and research issues.
