Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry

The Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program (LPSDP) for the Mining Industry is a program that promotes sustainable development and industry self-regulation through the proactive adoption of leading practice principles. The program was launched in 2006 and elements updated in 2016. The program is administered by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The LPSDP provides practical guidance to the mining industry through a series of targeted handbooks to assist with the implementation of leading practice, and encourage the mining industry and other stakeholders to continue to improve their social and environmental performance.

An underpinning principle of the program is to support the adoption of best practice approaches, attitudes and technologies.

The program has developed an internationally-successful series of handbooks which cover leading practice in mining management.

Each handbook has been made available for public download primarily in English, with a selection of handbooks translated into other languages as per their international demand. This is in recognition of the role that mining can play in driving economic growth and reducing poverty. The handbooks will assist developing countries to build capacity in the management and regulation of sustainable mining practices and engendering community acceptance of resources development.
